THOUGHTS: Performing on the Echo Park Rising Main Stage, Gavin Turek brought her infections energy to the stage and had the crowd moving to her upbeat sounds.Though it may not be the kind of music that I’d personally listen to, I’d buy her CD if it’ll get the girls I know to shake their groove thing like her fans in the audience did.

THOUGHTS: Babies on Acid is Hawthorne native Joel Jerome’s band. They describe their music as psychedelic, thriftstore folk. Whatever you want to call it, it’s good. I found out after the fact that there was a merch booth at the Echoplex. Had I known that while I was there, I would have purchased his latest Burger Records cassette.

THOUGHTS: It was my first time ever catching a performance at Origami Vinyl (one of my favorite indie record stores in Los Angeles, BTW). Bands set up on the second floor that overlooks the LP racks, so I asked the venue if I could position myself in the circular stairwell to snap a few pictures. It was a challenge, but a couple of them came out decent. Didn’t have an angle on the bassist though. Oh, and I really dig the trio’s sound. Dunno too much about them, but I’ve followed them on their social media outlets to keep up with how they develop. They are touring with the Allah-Las soon, so make sure you catch them on tour. As an aside, female drummers are sexy. Just sayin’.

THOUGHTS: Unbeknownst to me, Punk and Riotgrrrl veteran Allison Wolfe started a new band named Sex Stains, featuring vocals by her and Mecca Vazi Andrews, Sharif Dumani (guitar), Pachy Garcia (bass) and David Orlando (drums). I really dug their set. I had to leave a little early to snap pics of another band … and I regret that because ALICE freaking BAG joined them onstage for a song or two (I found that out on Instagram). I should have stayed. My loss.

THOUGHTS: Truth be told, I stumbled onto Dreamland’s set at Echo Park Rising because I wanted to test my camera out in the venue they were performing in (FYI, I don’t have the best camera equipment). Even though I knew nothing about the band, I enjoyed their music. Their sound reminded me of some of the rock bands I grew up with in the 90s. Maybe a little bit of a mix of Belle & Sebastian and The Pixies? Listen to some of their tracks and let me know what you think!

THOUGHTS: The first thing that caught my attention when  Doja Cat took the stage was her style. Her stylist should get a pat on the back, because Doja Cat’s features were striking. She, more specifically her face, was a lot of fun to shoot. Her music was as sultry as her appearance. Exuding a sensuality through her music, which is a combination of hip-hop and R&B, I’d expect her to get signed somewhere as both her image and sound are, at least in the current music landscape, marketable.

THOUGHTS: When I first looked at the list of artists that were performing at Echo Park Rising, it was overwhelming. Over 300 acts, and I surely couldn’t review each act to find out who would be worth catching. I posted a query on my personal Facebook page and a buddy of mine who was a former A&R for Doggy Style Records suggested that I check out GoldLink. THAT was a good idea. GoldLink’s sound was clean, fun and relatable. With production that reminded me of the fun hip-hop of the 90s, I couldn’t help but bounce during his performance, and EVERYBODY in the joint was bouncing with me. A fantastic live performance, who’s lyrical delivery was clear and concise, it was fantastic act for me to end the first day of Echo Park Rising.

THOUGHTS: I freaking love this band. Having caught their performance at the Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Concert opening for Omar Souleyman, I made it a point to catch their set for Echo Park Rising. This is post-disco, dance-punk at its best. If you want to be ahead of the music curve, I can only suggest that you jump on the bandwagon now. I have a feeling they’ll keep getting better and better.

THOUGHTS: Having been signed to Warner Music Group in 2013, I figured I’d stick around the Echoplex to check out Mystery Skulls. Having read on his wiki page that he was working on his forthcoming album with artist’s like Nile Rodgers, Adam Lambert and Avicii, I had some expectations. They were met. Though he performed with only his laptop (I had read that he had toured with a partial band), the lights and his animated performance actually exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed his set so much, I actually went out of my way to tell him that I enjoyed his set. That’s saying something.

THOUGHTS: If it’s good enough for Flying Lotus, it’s good enough for me (Matthewdavid is signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint). Though I’m not especially excited by producer performances, the beats he performed were particularly intriguing. Complex and pulsing, it was music that had the young audience dancing in the crowd.
