When the music gods give you a chance to watch a PERFECT pairing of musicians perform together, you are OBLIGATED to go.
Belgian native Marie Daulne is the founder of Zap Mama. A vocal group whose stylings are rooted in Afro-Pop, and uses the polyphonic technique (the use of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody). I fell in love with Zap Mama’s music with purchase of their album “7”. Being a vocalist in college, I was captivated with the vocal arrangements of this album. I mean, have you heard “Telephone”? Simply an ingenious use of voices. Other than the bass line and sparce drums, the sounds are all vocal. I was mesmerized … even if I didn’t know the language she was singing.
Antibalas (Spanish for “bulletproof”) is a Brooklyn-based afrobeat band that incorporates elements of jazz, funk and dub. “Who Is This America?” was the album that mesmerized me. The horns on “Indictment”? Holy sh*t. That track blew my mind.
I don’t know whose idea it was, but these two musically unique groups are touring together, playing together, RIGHT NOW. If you are a fan of music … superior music … you are obligated to buy a ticket to watch what happens when the music gods give you a once in a lifetime pairing.
There are only a handful of tickets left for their concert in Santa Monica, CA at The Broad Stage, and I can only beg you to purchase one of those tickets before they are sold out.
