THOUGHTS: Truth be told, I stumbled onto Dreamland’s set at Echo Park Rising because I wanted to test my camera out in the venue they were performing in (FYI, I don’t have the best camera equipment). Even though I knew nothing about the band, I enjoyed their music. Their sound reminded me of some of the rock bands I grew up with in the 90s. Maybe a little bit of a mix of Belle & Sebastian and The Pixies? Listen to some of their tracks and let me know what you think!

THOUGHTS: The first thing that caught my attention when  Doja Cat took the stage was her style. Her stylist should get a pat on the back, because Doja Cat’s features were striking. She, more specifically her face, was a lot of fun to shoot. Her music was as sultry as her appearance. Exuding a sensuality through her music, which is a combination of hip-hop and R&B, I’d expect her to get signed somewhere as both her image and sound are, at least in the current music landscape, marketable.

THOUGHTS: When I first looked at the list of artists that were performing at Echo Park Rising, it was overwhelming. Over 300 acts, and I surely couldn’t review each act to find out who would be worth catching. I posted a query on my personal Facebook page and a buddy of mine who was a former A&R for Doggy Style Records suggested that I check out GoldLink. THAT was a good idea. GoldLink’s sound was clean, fun and relatable. With production that reminded me of the fun hip-hop of the 90s, I couldn’t help but bounce during his performance, and EVERYBODY in the joint was bouncing with me. A fantastic live performance, who’s lyrical delivery was clear and concise, it was fantastic act for me to end the first day of Echo Park Rising.

New Music | Ms Lauryn Hill | “Black Rage” [Stream]

Given the recent civil unrest in Ferguson, MO, leave it to Lauryn Hill to drop a track she recorded over a year ago as a demo.

This is music at it’s best. Music that speaks to current social climate. This is the kind of music that makes on think deep about why we, as a society, are why, and who, we are.

I’mma have to give major props to Lauryn Hill for this track. This is music that matters. Music that SHOULD make a difference.

THOUGHTS: I freaking love this band. Having caught their performance at the Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Concert opening for Omar Souleyman, I made it a point to catch their set for Echo Park Rising. This is post-disco, dance-punk at its best. If you want to be ahead of the music curve, I can only suggest that you jump on the bandwagon now. I have a feeling they’ll keep getting better and better.

THOUGHTS: Having been signed to Warner Music Group in 2013, I figured I’d stick around the Echoplex to check out Mystery Skulls. Having read on his wiki page that he was working on his forthcoming album with artist’s like Nile Rodgers, Adam Lambert and Avicii, I had some expectations. They were met. Though he performed with only his laptop (I had read that he had toured with a partial band), the lights and his animated performance actually exceeded my expectations. I enjoyed his set so much, I actually went out of my way to tell him that I enjoyed his set. That’s saying something.

THOUGHTS: If it’s good enough for Flying Lotus, it’s good enough for me (Matthewdavid is signed to Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder imprint). Though I’m not especially excited by producer performances, the beats he performed were particularly intriguing. Complex and pulsing, it was music that had the young audience dancing in the crowd.

THOUGHTS: There’s a reason why this Los Angeles-based garage rock band has been making waves as of late. Their neo-psychedlic sound is effortless and their laid-back stage-presence adds to their vibe. It was my first time catching their act live, and I’m looking forward to catching them again this summer when they open for Ok Go at the Santa Monica Pier September 4th.

THOUGHTS: A singer-songwriter whose mellow sounds could serve one well in the bedroom. He performed in the Echo Park Methodist Church. The venue is not performance friendly. It was a warm day, and the church as muggy as all hell. I got to his set a little late, and there were already photographers there. I was about to start taking some photos, when one of the photographers said that he was “good to go” and that it was “okay to turn the lights back down.” Bummer for me, cause I couldn’t really take any decent shots once they dimmed the house light. Oh well … you snooze, you lose, I guess.

THOUGHTS: Solid, Psychadelic-folk rock. The whole time I watched them perform, I kept thinking to myself that I had heard of them before. When I got home, and searched the web, I was reminded that they released a highly acclaimed album back in 2009 titled “Songs of Shame.” Apparently, I had lost track of them. Thank god for social media, cause now I follow them on Facebook.
